The majority of multi-level companies will tell you that there is no purchase required to take advantage of their business opportunity. If you think you are going to make a dime by not buying any products you're on glue. The only way that you can make money in network marketing is by buying (and selling) products and getting your down-line to do the same thing.

Most multi-level companies have a fairly focused product line that they will tell you is the best thing available anywhere and is indispensable. It's either cold pressed, organically grown and blessed by the Dalai Lama himself or it is the same thing you buy at the store but now you can make money from it. The truth is that the majority of products in mlm are not really unique and life-changing. Not only that, in most cases you can go to your local Wal-Mart or Target and get essentially the same product for a lot less money.

Some companies also make the big mistake of promoting a product that you really only need to buy once such as water filters or magnets. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with any of those types of products but you have a much harder time building a residual income with them. It is essential that you have a consumable product. Preferably one that gets used up every month.

The effectiveness of most mlm products is highly questionable. This is not to say that they're no good. I'm just saying that many multi-level companies make claims about their products that they can't really back up. The reason for this is that they want the sales force (you) to believe that they are selling the greatest thing on earth so they'll buy more. (Notice I didn't say "sell more".)

Even though the product is often considered of less importance than the pay plan by many marketers, you can't make any money without one. And if you have a great product it will make building your business that much easier.
